Did you say Hamster Races?!

Posted by

How much exercise has your hamster been getting lately? We hope it’s a lot because they could just win the Hamster Races on August 26th at our store from 3 PM to 5 PM! Each hamster will be put in a nice comfy hamster ball… suspense will fill the air… and GO! They’ll be off and running. If you don’t have your own hamster, you can rent one at the store for $5 of store credit towards your next purchase, so you can still participate. Just in case you fall in love with your furry champion and want to take them home, here are some things you should know about hamsters:

  • Hamsters love exercise. It’s important to keep them active, especially when they’re often kept in smaller cages since they’re so tiny. Include a plastic hamster wheel inside their cage, so they can run as long as they’d like. Make sure it’s made of solid plastic since wheels with bars can lead to hamsters hurting themselves, and make sure it’s big enough that your hamster’s back doesn’t curve when they’re on it. That way they can be safe AND have fun.
  • Hamsters don’t take up much space. It’s best to keep them in a wire cage with a solid plastic bottom filled with paper bedding.
  • Hamsters are not very smelly animals. One concern about pets is that they may create an unpleasant smell in the house, but hamsters rarely have this problem. If do you start to smell them, it’s probably just time to clean their cage. Hamsters are good about keeping themselves well-groomed and clean.
  • Hamsters are nocturnal. A lot of that exercise they love so much will happen at night. If you’re a night owl yourself, they’ll be the perfect pet for you! If not, you may want to keep the cage in an area where the sound of the wheel won’t bother your sleep.
  • Make sure they always have clean water and food. Hamster pellets, grass hay, and seed mix are all good for your hamster. Fresh vegetables, the occasional treat, and chewing sticks to keep their teeth healthy will keep them happy too.
  • Handle them gently and with love. They’re super fluffy and cute, but also tiny, so be careful when handling them. They also live about two to three years, so cherish every moment with them.

We hope to see you and your hamster soon for the race, and if you don’t have one, we have plenty who will step in to race for you, if even just for the day. Call or come in to sign up before August 24th. If you don’t want to participate, that’s fine too, but a storewide special for 30% off all Kaytee small animal products will be going on as well, so you should definitely stop by and wish the hamsters luck!
